This fecund female is demanding our attention. She is proud of her sexuality, yet she is turned away from the viewer. Has she something to hide? Or is she uncertain of herself? She has many layers to her personality, but can we fathom her out?The angular shape floating by her face is only visible to the viewer, what does it represent? Does it represent a thought or an idea, or something more introspective and personal? The German expressionist Emil Nolde inspired this painting. His glorious depiction of Adam and Eve, painted in 1935, is an honest statement on the social conditions in Germany at that time and one that remains relevant in parts of the world today.

Martin Alton has been an artist for over thirty years and his work has been sold to clients in the United Kingdom, South Africa and the United States. Using many different mediums, Martin has developed his personal painting vision.

For his exhibition ‘Surbiton from Alton: new perspectives on Surbiton Station’, Martin has created a series of original oil paintings based on a theme of Surbiton Station. These paintings are both playful and dramatic and offer the viewer new angles and perspectives on this well known, iconic building.

“Surbiton Station was designed in 1937 by James Robb Scott in the Art Deco style. Used regularly by thousands of people for work and play, the station has been often overlooked. Hopefully, not any longer! The exhibition is a celebration of a place we all know and love but rarely look at.”
