The forest is a place inside my imagination. Like in a dream, it has seemingly unrelated objects in it that float in and out of vision. Everything is left to chance; the subconscious leads the conscious in this place. A Personal Forest is a journey of idea and emotion. Two cable cars can be seen travelling across the landscape. They pass over many layers and places, some are inside spaces others outside, yet all seem connected in some way. Like a Disneyland ride, dramas are presented before us all demanding attention. People merge into animals, strange creatures weave between shapes and objects, everything seems to be fluid, it is a busy place and all the inhabitants seem set on their own path. On the left panel a hunter with his gun contemplates using his silver bullet. A circus stage with two sirens distracts him from his prey. Next to the stage are two spirits, good and evil, this is a forest full of mystery and surprises. A mix of German folk-law, ego and libido underline the scenario. As in all dreams, it is about the inventor of this world, the master of this story, oneself. An artist wearing a white T-shirt with a reproduction of Picasso’’s Guernica printed on the front can be seen drawing a small red boat in his sketch book. The boat he is copying can be seen moored at the river’s edge across the valley on the second panel. Many things here appear back to front. Many shapes dissolve into space, sometimes a form will have more than one meaning. This is uneasy territory; beware of the forest and save me from my mind.

Martin Alton has been an artist for over thirty years and his work has been sold to clients in the United Kingdom, South Africa and the United States. Using many different mediums, Martin has developed his personal painting vision.

For his exhibition ‘Surbiton from Alton: new perspectives on Surbiton Station’, Martin has created a series of original oil paintings based on a theme of Surbiton Station. These paintings are both playful and dramatic and offer the viewer new angles and perspectives on this well known, iconic building.

“Surbiton Station was designed in 1937 by James Robb Scott in the Art Deco style. Used regularly by thousands of people for work and play, the station has been often overlooked. Hopefully, not any longer! The exhibition is a celebration of a place we all know and love but rarely look at.”
