Janine Abery was born and educated in New Zealand. The majority of her adult life has been split between living and working in New Zealand, and indulging her passion for traveling. Whilst working in the film industry her interest turned to stone carving to counter the hectic nature of her work. After making London her new home, she was encouraged to study Figurative Sculpture at The Heatherley School of Fine Art. Janine is particularly interested in the Koru, which is a spiral-like shape linked to the New Zealand fern plant. She has an affinity with how it represents the unfolding of new life, renewal and hope for the future, and the connection between life and land. Through her belief in Maori Mythology, she feels this connection continues in our lives today. Using stone as the medium for her sculpture allows her to express the spiritual bond she feels with her toi whenua, or homeland, through the use of a natural material. All her pieces are hand carved and finished, and are one-of-a-kind.
